Japanese scientists from the University of Tokyo introduced to the technological world – the "second skin" that scans the person basic biological condition; the commercial version should be in the market by 2021.
“Second Skin” is an electronic sensor that can be worn on the skin for a long time without any discomfort, it is so light and thin that users even forget about it, says a group of researchers and staff from the University of Tokyo. It would be perfect for elderly people whose status can be monitored in real time using the e-skin device. The sensor is flexible, does not cause any irritation and inflammation on the skin throughout the week due to constant bending and stretching. Symptoms of skin irritation, itching and redness appeared in 7-8 days of carrying this device which was demonstrated by volunteers. Scientists have yet to cope with this problem. According to them, this problem is caused by the device insufficient “breathability”.
“It will be possible to monitor patients’ vital signs without feeling any stress or discomfort,” Someya says about the future of her team research. In addition to patient care and medical applications, the new device ensures continuity, accurate monitoring of athletes physiological signals and body movements without interfering with their training process or results.
